With the continuing growth of EPIC Student Church, new campus friends and connections (like with Make Poverty History and the Student Umbrella for Social Justice), and new colleagues in the U of A Interfaith Chaplains Association (check us out at www.ualberta.ca/chaplains), 2009 finished with strong momentum and we plan to build on that in 2010.

I’m also thrilled to have Aaron Au interning with me this semester (for the first time in my three years with PCM there will be a PCM “team”!).

Not to mention the fact that us Glombicks plan on growing in 2010 with another “Baby G” on the way (due mid-July).

With all of that happening, how could 2010 be anything but “epic”?!

September!

September is here and once again it has started with a “bang”!!

It always amazes me how campus can go from a relatively quiet place over Summer, to a bustling campus with 35,000 students in almost a ‘day’.

Transitioning into a new year always feels a bit ‘crazy’, but I am once again thrilled with God’s faithfulness in so many areas.

EPIC Student Church has a new leadership team, has re-confirmed its meeting venue at Dewey’s, and has already connected with many old and new friends. Not to mention the fact that we have a spiffy new website for you to check out at www.epicstudentchurch.com!!!

Chairing the University of Alberta Interfaith Chaplains Association has also been great so far. On August 27th the chaplains all worked together to make and serve lunch to a few hundred new international students at the U of A (as part of the U of A’s International Student Orientation).

Some News Highlights...

I (Matthew) was recently elected as the Chair for the University of Alberta Interfaith Chaplains' Association for 2009-10. Serving in this role is both an honor, and a special responsibility.

...PCM has had a strong year (ministry-wise, financially, and in many ways), and we want to build on that. The PCM board will be meeting in early June to talk about strengthening the long-term sustainability of the campus ministry, so that there are many more "strong years" in the future!

Matthew will be speaking at a variety of churches and venues over the Summer, including The Oasis in Grand Prairie (June 14th), and Alberta Beach Youth Camp (July 4 - 12th).

As always, there is lots happening around EPIC Student Church (the official student group of PCM). As you can imagine, life is very busy in the early days of a new birth, so the EPIC leadership team has been humming.

...On a personal note, as the Pentecostal Chaplain at the University of Alberta, I am very excited about the new phase that Pentecostal Campus Ministries is entering into with EPIC. I think a student church is an ideal fit in terms of a specific 'ministry vehicle' for helping students find meaningful spirituality and community during their time on campus.

Please pray for us, share our excitement, and journey with us by checking out our website (www.epicstudentchurch.com) and coming out on Monday nights! I will also give broad-picture updates on the student church plant and on the latest in campus ministry at the U of A through my monthly PCM email updates.

HE'S HERE!!!!!!!!

That's right! We're also thoroughly enjoying hanging out with the wonderful team of students and other 'campus missionaries' who are coming together as we plan to start the student church on campus this Fall.

...In the last while I have been overwhelmed at how individuals and churches are stepping-up and giving us their prayer support, their financial support, and even their time and service. It really feels like God is building this movement, and bringing a special TEAM of investors, intercessors, and workers to help build His Kingdom at the U of A.

Sometimes the (relatively) small group of students that are gathering together, and PCM's little office here, feel so small in the enormity of this campus. ... But the team of people that God is bringing together in this province are evidence of the fact that this is a vital, worthwhile cause. In some ways, I feel in my heart like we are 'holding Normandy' right now, and that there is a great momentum-shift ahead.

We're so busy running around with our materialistic mindset that we get stressed about shopping mall parking lots, checkout lines, and 'getting all the little details together' that we forget about the most important main parts of Christmas.

...I think it's sometimes easy to get so busy trying to pull together all the details of everything that I'm supposedly 'doing for God' as part of my religion that I forget just to know and celebrate Jesus. I'm in love with Christ first and foremost because of who He is... - not just because I'm already in this 'religious thing.' I think the Pharisees in the Bible missed getting to know Christ for who He was because their religion was more important than Jesus.

...This season I want to make a point of setting apart enough quality time to cherish and get to know Him better.

...And don't forget to stay up-to-date with the student church plant coming at the U of A... - it's going to be a very exciting 2008!!

...Or does it not count as a miracle because I partially know how it happened (by my brother-in-law somehow managing to stall my sister by walking around the park)? ... First of all, I had essentially lost hope in the fact that we would at all be able to surprise my sister that night, and yet earlier I had specifically prayed asking and trusting God to work things out. ... When God first put a rainbow in the sky as a sign to remind Noah and his family that He would never destroy Earth with a flood again, it was a miracle to them.

...So if those laws contradict His will - i.e. if He's got to get across a lake and a storm's in the way - then those 'laws', or the liquid character of water and the raging storm, those need to change.

...Maybe one day we'll make breakthrus in physics, understand new dimensions, and be able to 'see' into the spiritual realm that is around us everyday (i.e. 'dark matter', string theory, ...?!!). That won't change the fact that the works of God are miracles, it just means we'll be able to marvel and glorify Him even more for what He does.

...I think we can only truly 'run in the path of God's commands' when we realize that we practice our religion because He has set our hearts free, and we do it because of how much we love God and want to be closer to Him (in response to how he has loved us).

...At numerous points in the last couple of days I have felt like a chicken with my head cut-off, having so much to do I don't know what to start next, and barely keeping my nose out of the water in a sea of overwhelming anxiety. But a couple of times in the last couple of days, I have just (out of desperation) stopped, laid down on my office floor, and said "God - I 'don't care' about everything I have to do... - what's most important to You?". Now, I don't expect God to spoon-feed me everything I need to do in the day, but at a couple of overwhelming moments He just helped remind me that I don't need to be a slave to a busy schedule (in fact, I think it saddens and is even a sin against Him when I am). ... So, I need to keep in mind why I'm living this crazy life, and yet also be willing to lay it down and re-focus thru all of it to remember what is most important in light of just being 'Matthew Glombick - the man, and lover of God' (and lover of the most extravagantly beautiful Michelle!).
